Changing just the cylinder or the whole lock: when less is enough

You don't always need to replace the whole lock. When changing the cylinder is enough and when the state of the mechanism calls for more.

Faced with a key that is hard to turn, a lost key or a change of tenant, it isn't always necessary to replace the whole lock: in many cases changing the cylinder is enough, and it is much cheaper and quicker.

When the cylinder is enough

If the rest of the mechanism (the lock body, the locking points on multipoint locks) works correctly and the only need is to change the key combination for security (lost keys, change of tenant), or the cylinder is worn but the rest isn't, replacing just the cylinder solves the problem at a fraction of the cost of a whole lock.

When the entire lock must be changed

If the inner mechanism is damaged (locking points that don't engage properly, worn springs), if you want to raise the security level beyond what the current cylinder allows, or if the lock is very old and compatible cylinders no longer exist on the market, the whole set must be replaced.

How to explain it to the client

Many clients ask to "change the lock" when their problem is actually solved with a new cylinder. Explaining the difference and offering the cheaper option when it is technically enough builds trust in the long run, even if the ticket for that visit is smaller.
