Installing a fixed window grille seems a simple job, but there are two regulatory aspects worth keeping in mind before giving a quote: bar spacing for child safety and whether that window may be a required evacuation exit.
Bar spacing
As a widely recommended child-safety reference, the spacing between bars should not exceed 10-12 cm, to prevent a child from putting their head between them. It is a criterion worth applying even when the client doesn't expressly ask for it, above all in homes with small children or on ground floors.
When the window can't have a fixed grille
If the window is considered an emergency exit under the building's project (usual on ground floors or in certain home layouts), a fixed grille may breach fire-protection regulations by preventing evacuation. In these cases, the solution must be a hinged grille with a quick-opening system from the inside, not a fixed grille.
Why ask before quoting
Before giving a price for a grille, it's wise to ask whether there is any emergency-exit requirement for that specific window (sometimes stated in the home's project or required by the community), so as not to install a solution that later has to be replaced for failing to comply.
