A balcony often leaks into the flat below. What steps a correct waterproofing includes even if the surface is small.

Even if a balcony's surface is small, waterproofing it correctly is no different in process from a large terrace, and skipping steps because it is "little surface" is the usual reason the leak returns within a few months.

Substrate preparation

Before applying any system, the existing paving must be removed if it is deteriorated or if adhesion of the new system on it cannot be guaranteed, cracks repaired and the slope towards the drain checked (recommended minimum around 1.5-2%), correcting it if it is insufficient to drain water properly.

Singular points: where it almost always fails

On a small balcony, the proportion of "singular points" (junction with the facade, door frame, drain, anchored railing) relative to total surface is much higher than on a large terrace, so reinforcing each of these junctions well is proportionally more important here than on large surfaces.

Why "a coat of waterproof paint" isn't enough

A simple waterproof paint over a balcony with slope problems or poorly resolved singular points hides the problem visually for a while, but doesn't correct the origin. The quote should always include checking the slope and singular points, not just the finishing material.
