Electronic locks with fingerprint, numeric code or mobile app are no longer just a technological novelty: they are a real option that many clients ask for, although it is wise to explain their advantages and limits well before installing them.

Advantages over the traditional mechanical lock

They allow temporary access to be given to third parties (cleaners, holiday lets, family) without duplicating physical keys, and many models keep a log of who came in and when. They also remove the risk of being locked out for forgetting your keys, replaced by the risk of forgetting the code or running out of battery.

The limit to explain: the battery

Almost all domestic electronic locks run on batteries, with a life of several months to over a year depending on use. It is essential to explain to the client that they must check the battery level periodically, and most models include an emergency physical key or a port for an emergency external battery if it runs out completely.

Compatibility with the existing door

Not all electronic locks are compatible with every door: some replace the cylinder while keeping the rest of the mechanical mechanism, whereas others replace the whole lock. Checking the type of door and current lock before quoting avoids offering an incompatible model.
