Waterproofing a tank or cistern for water intended for human consumption has a requirement that doesn't apply to a terrace or balcony: the material must be certified as suitable for contact with drinking water; being waterproof isn't enough.

Why certification is essential

Many standard waterproofing products contain components that are not safe in prolonged contact with water intended for human consumption. Using a product without the proper certification (normally referring to specific health regulations) can contaminate the stored water, with the health and legal risk that implies.

Preparing the tank before treating it

Before applying the lining, the tank must be emptied completely, thoroughly cleaned of sediment and, if necessary, treated against mould or algae if it has gone a long time without maintenance. The new material is always applied to a clean, dry surface, never over residues of the previous treatment.

Curing time before the tank is used again

Products suitable for drinking water usually require a curing time and, in many cases, a specific rinse before the tank is put back into service, a period that must be communicated to the client so they aren't left without supply earlier than planned.
