Facade water repellent is one of the cheapest and least invasive treatments, but it's important to be clear about when it is really enough and when the problem needs more than superficially repelling water.
What a water repellent does exactly
It is a product that, applied to the wall, reduces the surface's water absorption without sealing it or forming a visible film, letting the wall go on breathing normally. It repels rain and reduces surface dampness, but it does not solve underlying problems such as rising damp or active leaks.
When it is the right solution
It works well as a preventive treatment on sound facades with no active pathologies, to reduce rainwater absorption and slow the material's deterioration (especially on stone or exposed brick), or as periodic maintenance after a facade cleaning.
When it isn't enough
If the facade already shows rising damp, leaks through cracks, or coating detachment, the water repellent does not correct the origin of the problem: it only acts on the sound surface. In those cases the corresponding treatment must come first (chemical barrier, crack sealing, coating repair), and the water repellent, if anything, as a final protective layer.
