Not all keys can be duplicated the same way: high-security cylinders are designed precisely to make unauthorised copying difficult, and that has direct implications for how a duplicate is quoted.

Why some keys can't be copied anywhere

High-end cylinders usually require an ownership card that proves who may request copies, and the keys carry patented profiles that only the manufacturer's specific machines can reproduce, normally in the hands of authorised locksmiths or directly at the factory. This limits who can duplicate them and makes the process more expensive than a normal hardware-shop key.

What information to ask the client for

Before quoting a security duplicate, the client must provide the ownership card (or arrange its recovery if lost, an additional procedure with the manufacturer) and, in some systems, prove their identity as an authorised holder.

Guideline price compared with a standard key

A standard hardware-shop key can cost just a few euros, whereas a key for a high-security cylinder, because of its specific manufacture and the verification process, can cost several times more. Explaining this difference stops the client seeing the price as excessive without understanding the real reason.
