Charging an electric vehicle at home: what circuit it needs

Installing an EV charging point requires its own circuit, specific residual-current protection and sometimes notification to the distributor. What to include in the quote.

It is increasingly common for an electrical quote to include installing a charging point for an electric car, and it has its own requirements that it doesn't share with the other circuits in the home.

Mandatory independent circuit

The REBT (Spanish low-voltage regulation) requires EV charging to have its own circuit, with its own circuit breaker and, in most installations, a type A or higher RCD (the general type AC RCD is not valid). The cable size depends on the charger's power, normally between 2.5 and 6 mm² for domestic chargers of 3.7 to 7.4 kW.

Wallbox: power and charging mode

The most usual domestic chargers (wallbox) range from 3.7 kW (16 A single-phase) to 22 kW (three-phase), although in a detached home the most common is between 7.4 and 11 kW. The power chosen determines the cable size and whether the home's contracted power needs increasing.

Procedure with the distributor

For powers above a threshold (which varies by autonomous community, usually around 3.68 kW), the installation must be notified to or registered with the distribution company before being connected, in addition to the usual electrical certificate.
