A made-to-measure locksmith job, such as a railing, a grille or a metal structure, is almost always divided into two clearly different phases: fabrication in the workshop and installation on site, and quoting them separately helps the client understand the process better.

Workshop fabrication

In the workshop the pieces are cut, welded and prepared to the measurements taken on site, with access to fixed tools (precision saws, bench welding, surface treatment) that give a more careful finish than working directly in situ. This phase determines a good part of the material cost and of the hours of skilled labour.

Installation on site

Installation is the final assembly of the already fabricated piece in its definitive location, with anchors, levelling adjustments and, if necessary, final fixing welds. This phase is usually shorter in time than fabrication, but it can get complicated if the measurements taken at the start don't fit the real site perfectly.

Why prior measuring is the most critical phase

A measuring error before fabrication starts in the workshop forces already-cut pieces to be redone, which is much more expensive than adjusting on site. Investing time in precise measuring, including checking the real squareness and levels of the site, reduces the risk of having to repeat workshop work.
