When a client asks to "improve the security of the door", you don't always need to change everything. There is a clear hierarchy of cost versus benefit, and starting at the wrong point means spending more than necessary or falling short on real protection.

The best cost–benefit upgrade: the cylinder

An anti-bumping, anti-drill cylinder greatly reduces the risk from the most common opening techniques today, and it is the security upgrade with the best cost–benefit on an entrance door — well before considering changing the whole lock.

The size is given in mm on each side of the escutcheon (for example 30×30), according to the thickness of the door. A cylinder that sticks out several millimetres from the escutcheon is vulnerable to being snapped with a simple wrench, so always match the size to the real thickness of the door instead of taking the first size available.

When you do need to change the whole lock

The mortice multipoint lock adds several anchor points to the frame, much more resistant to leverage than a single point:

  • 1 point — insufficient for a main entrance door in most insurance assessments.
  • 3 or 5 points — the de facto standard today on home entrance doors.
  • 7 points — the highest level, common on high-end security doors.

If the cylinder is already in good condition and there is only one anchor point, switching to a 3- or 5-point multipoint is the next logical upgrade before considering a complete security door.

When the grille or metal door also protects the opening

If the project includes window grilles or metal doors, there is an important regulatory nuance: a completely fixed grille or door can block the emergency exit in case of fire. If local regulations or the project require it, the alternative is a hinged grille that can be opened quickly from inside without a key (handle or emergency button) — a grille that opens only with a key from inside doesn't solve the evacuation problem in a real emergency.

Automation: the detail that gets forgotten in quotes

If the garage door or metal shutter has a motor, always check that it has an emergency manual release: without it, a power cut leaves the door or shutter stuck in whatever position it was in at that moment. And always note the model and codes of the remotes handed to the client — without that reference, losing a remote in the future means reprogramming the whole system from scratch.

Frequently asked questions

Is it worth changing just the cylinder instead of the whole lock? Yes, in most cases: it is the upgrade with the best cost–benefit, especially if the lock and its anchor points are already in good condition.

How many anchor points does an entrance door need? 3 or 5 points is the current standard; 1 point is considered insufficient in most insurance assessments for a main entrance door.

Can a fixed grille be fitted to a bedroom window? Check local regulations: a completely fixed grille can block the escape route in case of fire, and in many cases a hinged system with emergency opening is required.

Conclusion

Not all security upgrades cost or deliver the same: starting with the anti-bumping cylinder and moving up to a multipoint lock if needed is more efficient than going straight to a complete security door without first evaluating what is really failing in the current one. Quoting it by clear items helps the client decide where to invest first.
