A shop window needs different glass from a home window, with its own safety and size requirements. What to check before quoting.

A shop window for commercial premises has different demands from a home window: larger area without intermediate supports, direct exposure to the public road and, in many cases, specific regulatory safety requirements against breakage.

Safety glass mandatory

Because of exposure to the public road and the risk of breakage from impact (accidental or deliberate), shop windows usually require safety laminated glass, which on breakage keeps the fragments stuck to the interlayer instead of scattering, reducing the risk to pedestrians.

Large formats without intermediate support

Modern shop windows tend towards large continuous panes without intermediate framing, which demands thicker glass and, on large pieces, multi-layer laminates to guarantee enough structural strength without additional supports.

Transport and installation measures

Large-format shop-window glass requires specific transport and lifting equipment (high-capacity suction cups, a crane in some cases), an item to be quoted separately that can limit the access available to the premises, a factor to check before giving a fixed price.
