Acoustic glass: when to recommend it against outside noise

Acoustic laminated glass reduces street noise far more than standard double glazing. When it justifies its additional cost.

Standard double glazing already improves sound insulation compared with single glass, but when outside noise is a real problem (heavy traffic, a nightlife area, proximity to busy roads), specific acoustic glass makes a far more noticeable difference.

What makes acoustic glass different

Acoustic laminated glass incorporates a special interlayer (different from that of standard safety laminate) designed specifically to dampen noise frequencies, not just to give mechanical strength. Combined with an air cavity of suitable thickness, it reduces perceived noise far more significantly than conventional double glazing.

Asymmetric composition: a detail that improves the result

A common technique in projects with high acoustic demands is to use two panes of different thicknesses in the same window (for example 6 mm and 8 mm), since each thickness dampens different frequencies better, and the asymmetric combination reduces the resonance effect that two identical panes have with each other.

When the extra cost is justified

It is especially recommended in bedrooms facing streets with heavy traffic, homes near expressways, nightlife areas or proximity to airports. In rooms not facing the noise source, standard double glazing is usually enough without the extra cost of acoustic glass.
