Choosing between an electric and a gas water heater isn't just a matter of taste: it changes the installation needed, the space it takes and who can install it.
Electric water heater: simpler installation
The electric water heater only needs a water point and an independent electrical circuit with its own circuit breaker, with no flue or gas connection. It is the easiest option to install in renovations where there is no gas supply, although its running cost per litre heated is usually higher than gas.
Gas water heater: needs a flue
The gas water heater requires a gas supply, and most current models (room-sealed, forced-draught) also need a flue to the outside, which determines where it can be located. In return, it usually heats water faster and at lower running cost where gas is cheaper than electricity.
Capacity according to simultaneous use points
Besides the type of energy, capacity must be sized: a 50-80 litre heater is usually enough for a home with 1-2 bathrooms in normal use, whereas homes with several bathrooms or high simultaneous demand (shower and washing machine at once) may need 100 litres or more, or consider a combi boiler instead of a separate heater.
