How much skirting board do I need and in what material? Calculation guide

Calculating skirting seems simple but the door gaps and corners are forgotten. How to measure properly and which material to choose depending on the floor.

Calculating the skirting board for a home seems one of the simplest items of a joinery quote, but it's easy to come up short if you don't subtract the door openings properly and don't allow for the waste of mitred corners.

How to calculate the length

Measure the perimeter of each room and subtract the width of the door openings (not the drain, the clear door passage). To that result add a 10-15% margin to cover mitre cuts at the corners, joints and possible cutting errors on site.

Solid wood, lacquered MDF or PVC skirting

Solid wood skirting is the dearest and the one that best matches natural wood or parquet flooring; lacquered MDF is cheaper and the most usual option in new-build and standard renovation; PVC or aluminium skirting is used mainly in technical areas or where moisture resistance is required, such as garages or commercial premises.

Skirting height: a design decision with a price impact

Taller skirtings (10-15 cm) give a more contemporary look but cost more per linear metre than the traditional 6-7 cm ones. Confirming the height before measuring and ordering material avoids buying too little if the client changes their mind halfway through the supply.
