Changing a hinged door for a sliding one seems a simple matter of taste, but in practice it depends on how much free space there is next to the opening and what type of partition is behind it.

Hinged door: the cheapest option

It is the simplest and cheapest solution to install, needs no free wall space at the sides, but its swing takes up space inside the room, relevant in small bathrooms or corridors.

Surface-mounted sliding door: quick, but visible

It slides on a track mounted on the wall, visible from outside, and is the cheapest of the sliding options. It doesn't gain space inside the room (the swing of the hinged door no longer gets in the way, but the leaf still takes up wall) and is easy to install over existing partitions without building work.

Pocket sliding door (cassette): gains space, requires building work

It is hidden inside the partition by means of a metal cassette, and is the option that really frees up space both inside and outside the room. It requires the partition to have enough cavity (normally plasterboard with a specific frame) and is installed before closing the partition, so it can't be added later without masonry work.
