Quote validity period: how long to keep it and why

A quote with no expiry date exposes the professional to outdated material prices. What period is reasonable and how to communicate it.

A quote with no expiry date can become a problem months later, when the client decides to accept it just as material prices have already risen notably.

Why setting a period is essential

Construction material prices can vary significantly within a few months, especially for materials sensitive to raw materials (metals, wood, petroleum derivatives). Without a clear validity period, the professional is in practice bound to keep a price that may no longer be profitable.

Usual periods depending on the type of work

As an indicative reference, between 15 and 30 days is a reasonable period for most construction and renovation quotes. For projects with materials whose price is especially volatile, or in periods of known market instability, it may be prudent to reduce that period to 10-15 days.

What to do if the client accepts after the deadline

When a client wants to accept an already expired quote, the right thing is to review current prices before confirming, and if they have changed significantly, present an update instead of automatically keeping outdated figures that can cause losses.
