A glass canopy for a terrace is not a vertical surface like a window: being practically horizontal or steeply inclined, it must withstand loads that facade glass never meets, such as the weight of accumulated water or snow.

Laminated glass, always

For any glazed roof over walkways or living areas, the glass must be safety laminated, never plain tempered or monolithic. In case of breakage from impact (a branch, heavy hail), the laminate keeps the fragments bonded to the interlayer, preventing loose pieces from falling on the people below.

Load calculation by climate zone

The thickness and composition of the laminate must be calculated according to the snow and wind load of the geographical area, not by applying a generic standard. A canopy in an area of frequent snow needs greater structural strength than the same piece in a snow-free area.

Support structure and drainage slope

Besides the glass, the framework that holds it must be sized for those same loads, and the canopy must have a minimum slope that lets rainwater drain without pooling on the glass, a design detail that affects both safety and durability of the whole.
