Cleaning facade or high-level glass: what means the regulations require

Cleaning glass at height isn't a standard glazing job; it requires specific safety equipment. What to check before quoting it.

Cleaning the exterior glass of a facade at height, whether on a home or a commercial building, is not just one more cleaning service: it is work at height subject to risk-prevention regulations that determine the necessary means and, therefore, the quote.

Means depending on height and access

For lower floors or areas reachable from inside, a telescopic pole from inside or from an adjacent balcony may be enough. Above a certain height with no safe interior access, it is mandatory to use means such as an aerial work platform, scaffolding or rope-access techniques with certified ropes by staff specifically trained for it.

Why you can't improvise

Working on a facade without proper protection exposes the worker to a risk of serious falls, and the professional to legal liability in case of accident. Quoting "just the cleaning" without including the necessary safety means is as incomplete as leaving out the scaffolding on a roofing job.

On commercial facades with a lot of glazed surface, a periodic maintenance contract (quarterly or half-yearly depending on the area and the level of ambient dirt) is recommended, a more stable recurring source of income than relying only on one-off jobs.
