Quoting a wooden staircase without measuring properly on site is risky: every staircase is different, and an error of a few millimetres in tread or riser forces already-cut pieces to be repeated.
Data to take before quoting
Number of steps, tread (depth of each step) and riser (height), clear width of the stair, whether there's a wall on one side, both or neither, and whether it will have a balustrade or handrail. On curved staircases or ones with a landing, the exact development of the curve must also be taken, not an approximate measurement.
Cladding an existing staircase vs. building a new one
Cladding an existing concrete or masonry staircase with wood is cheaper than building a complete new staircase, because it makes use of the structure already there. Building a new staircase from scratch also involves the structural calculation of the support, much more complex and expensive.
Why not give a price without a prior visit
A staircase with irregular measurements (steps of different heights, usual in old buildings) may need pieces cut to size one by one, instead of repeated standard pieces, which sends workshop labour cost soaring. Without a prior visit, the risk of giving a price far from the real one is high.
