The ridge, the top finishing where the two slopes of a gable roof meet, is one of the points that suffers most from its direct exposure to sun, rain and wind, and one of the most common causes of leaks on roofs of some age.

Function of the ridge

The ridge pieces (or ridge tiles) close the join between the two slopes, stopping rainwater getting in at that meeting point. They are fixed with mortar or, in more modern installations, with mechanical fixing systems and integrated ventilation that lets hot air out of the inside of the roof.

Why it's a critical point over time

The traditional ridge-fixing mortar cracks with the cycles of thermal expansion and the natural movements of the structure, producing small cracks through which water can seep in little by little. It's usual for a roof maintenance inspection always to include checking the condition of the ridge mortar.

Ventilated ridge: the most current solution

Ventilated ridge systems replace the rigid mortar with pieces with mechanical fixing and a vent that lets the cavity under the tile ventilate, reducing condensation and avoiding the long-term cracking problem of traditional mortar.
