Choosing between clay and concrete tile affects both the price and the weight the roof structure must bear, a fact worth checking before closing the quote.

Clay tile: tradition and good ageing

Clay tile keeps its colour better over the years (the pigment is built into the fired clay itself) and is the reference option in refurbishing traditional roofs or in areas where municipal regulations require keeping the original appearance. Its price is usually somewhat higher than concrete tile.

Concrete tile: cheaper, somewhat heavier

Concrete tile is generally cheaper and offers good mechanical strength, although its colour (applied on the surface) tends to lose intensity over years of sun exposure. Its weight per unit is usually greater than clay, a relevant fact if the roof structure is old and its load capacity hasn't been checked.

Why check the weight before quoting

Changing from a lighter to a heavier type of tile on an old structure may require prior structural reinforcement, an item that shouldn't be left out of the quote if the chosen material weighs noticeably more than the original.
