How many water points does a kitchen or a full bathroom need?

Miscounting cold, hot and waste points is a common cause of plumbing quotes falling short. A practical guide by room.

Before calculating metres of pipe, it's worth counting properly how many water points (cold, hot and waste) each room has, because each point involves a branch, its valves and, almost always, its own section of waste pipe.

Full bathroom

A standard full bathroom needs cold and hot water points for the washbasin and shower or bath (2 points each), cold water for the WC, and in many cases an additional point for a bidet or a second shower. In total, between 5 and 7 water points plus their corresponding waste pipes.

Kitchen

The kitchen needs at least cold and hot water for the sink, cold water for the dishwasher, and more and more often an additional filtered cold water point if a reverse-osmosis tap is fitted. Adding waste pipes, a typical kitchen handles between 4 and 6 points.

Why miscounting this item is expensive

Every water point forgotten in the initial quote means reopening a chase already closed or a floor already laid, with the extra cost of dismantling and redoing finishes that the plumber shouldn't have to bear. Reviewing the complete layout before giving a price avoids this surprise.
