How to measure a job correctly before quoting

A badly done measurement is the origin of most quotes that fall short. Good practices for measuring accurately before giving a price.

Behind most quotes that fall short there is an imprecise initial measurement, not a mistake in the price calculation. Measuring well is the step with the greatest impact on the final accuracy of the quote.

Always measure on site, don't trust old plans

A home's original plans often don't reflect earlier renovations or small modifications made over time. Measuring directly on site, even if there is a reference plan, avoids carrying over errors from the start.

Note the state of the substrate, not just the measurements

As well as dimensions, it's worth noting the real state of what is going to be worked on: whether a wall is plumb, whether a floor is level, whether there is visible damp. This data determines how much preparation work the job will need before the "visible" work that the client expects to see quoted.

Photograph and document the visit

Taking photos of each room and relevant point during the measuring serves as a later reference when drawing up the quote at the office or at home, avoiding relying only on memory or on quick notes taken in a hurry during the visit.

Double-check critical measurements

For measurements that heavily influence the quote (total area, length of long installation runs), a quick second check before leaving the visit avoids having to go back just to re-measure a doubtful figure.
