Copper and multilayer (PEX-aluminium-PEX) are today the two most common options for hot and cold water networks in homes, and choosing between them changes the quote and the way of working on site quite a lot.
Copper: the durable classic
Copper has been the standard in plumbing for decades thanks to its strength and durability, over 50 years when well installed. It is joined by capillary soldering, which takes more time and skill, and its price per metre is higher than multilayer, especially when the metal price is high.
Multilayer: speed and less labour
Multilayer pipe is joined with mechanical fittings (press or threaded), with no soldering or flame, which greatly reduces installation time and on-site risk. It is somewhat cheaper than copper and very flexible, making it easier to route through curved chases without extra elbows.
What to choose in each case
For quick renovations or tight quotes, multilayer usually wins on installation time. For exposed installations, demanding ones, or where the client values proven very long-term durability, copper remains the reference option. Mixing both materials is possible with the right transitions, but it is best avoided if not necessary, to simplify future maintenance.
