Insulating domestic hot water and heating pipes is not an optional extra in many installations: the RITE (the Spanish regulation for thermal installations in buildings) requires it on certain sections, and leaving it out of the quote puts the installer outside the regulations.
Which sections must be insulated
Insulation is mandatory on all domestic hot water and heating pipework running through unheated areas: service shafts, under the roof, garages or outdoors. In sections inside the heated home the requirement is lower, although it is still advisable to reduce heat loss and prevent condensation on cold water pipes.
Minimum thickness by diameter
The thickness of the insulating pipe sleeve depends on the pipe diameter and whether the section is indoors or outdoors: as an indicative guide, between 19 and 35 mm thick for typical household diameters, increasing for larger pipes or outdoor installations exposed to frost.
Cost versus savings
Insulation adds a relatively low material and labour cost per linear metre compared with the whole installation, and it means less heat loss (a real saving on the client's bill) and less risk of condensation damaging nearby structure or finishes. It is an easy item to justify in the quote.
