Curved plasterboard and special shapes: how much they add to the project

Bending plasterboard for organic shapes or arches takes technique and extra time. How much the price rises compared with a conventional straight partition.

Curved shapes and special designs in plasterboard (arches, columns, ceilings with curves) are among the most common requests in design-minded renovations, and also among the most underestimated when quoting.

Why bending board takes longer

To bend a plasterboard sheet there are two main techniques: progressively dampening it with a perforating roller until it is flexible (gentle curves), or using specific thinner flexible board designed for tighter curves. Both techniques demand drying times or careful handling that a straight partition doesn't need.

Curved structure: more framing, more work

Framing for curved shapes must be cut and fitted piece by piece following the radius of curvature, instead of the standard straight runs of a conventional partition, which multiplies the assembly time of the structure.

How much the quote rises

As an indicative reference, a curved section or special shape can cost between 1.5 and 3 times more per m² than the equivalent straight partition, depending on the complexity of the design. It is important to visualise the design with the client before giving a price, because small changes of radius or shape can vary the execution time quite a bit.
