Damage to plasterboard partitions (moving-day holes, door knocks, cracks at the ceiling junction) is among the most frequent call-outs a plasterboard fitter receives, and is usually resolved without rebuilding the whole partition.

Small holes

For small holes (up to about 5-10 cm), a self-adhesive mesh patch or a piece of board cut to size, fixed with jointing compound and reinforced with tape before applying the finishing coats and sanding, is usually enough. It is a quick repair, one visit.

Large holes or areas damaged by damp

When the damage is bigger (a large breach, or board deteriorated by a water leak), it is more reliable to cut out the affected area cleanly back to the nearest stud and fit a new, well-fixed piece of board, rather than trying to patch an irregular gap.

Cracks at the wall-ceiling junction

Fine cracks at the junction between partition and ceiling are usually due to small natural movements of the structure, not a plasterboard failure. They are repaired with a specific flexible filler (not rigid jointing compound) so it absorbs those movements without cracking again straight away.
