Installing solar panels for self-consumption doesn't end on the roof: it also requires work on the consumer unit and the home's internal wiring, a part many "solar installation" quotes leave out by mistake.
Electrical elements to add
Besides the panels and the inverter, the installation needs: DC cabling from the panels to the inverter (with its own protection), a DC protection board, and a new circuit from the inverter to the home's main consumer unit, with its own circuit breaker and RCD. In installations with a storage battery, the battery's specific cabling and protections are added too.
Bidirectional meter
To qualify for surplus compensation, the distributor replaces the conventional meter with a bidirectional one, able to measure both consumption from the grid and energy fed in by the solar installation. This procedure runs in parallel with the electrical installation but determines when the system can be switched on.
Why a specific certificate is needed
The self-consumption installation requires its own Electrical Installation Certificate, separate from the home's, and in many cases a technical report for the regional authority. Quoting without this paperwork leaves the client with panels installed but unable to legalise them.
