Anti-damp paint: when it works and when it doesn't solve the problem

Anti-damp paint covers stains, but doesn't always solve the cause. When it is enough and when the damp has to be treated before painting.

Selling anti-damp paint as the definitive solution to an active damp problem is one of the mistakes that generates the most complaints, because the paint hides the stain but doesn't always remove the cause.

When anti-damp paint is enough

It works well on one-off, already-resolved stains: an old leak already repaired, slight condensation in a poorly ventilated bathroom that will be improved with an extractor fan, or sealing superficial damp of known and controlled origin.

When the problem will come back

If the damp is active (an unrepaired leak, rising damp from the ground, or condensation from lack of ventilation left uncorrected), painting over it only delays the problem a few months: the stain will reappear and, in the worst case, the paint may peel off under the pressure of the damp behind it.

What to quote before painting

Faced with a damp stain, it's wise to identify the origin (leak, rising damp, condensation) before giving a paint quote, and to offer the client separately the fix for the origin (waterproofing, ventilation, repair) and the cosmetic repainting, making clear that one without the other is not a complete solution.
