Protecting with tape and plastic before painting: how long it really takes

The protection routine before painting is a real time item that many quotes ignore. How long it usually takes depending on the type of room.

Before opening the first tin of paint, properly protecting the floor, furniture, frames and skirting takes a time that rarely appears as its own item in the quote, though it is entirely real.

What complete protection includes

Covering the floor with plastic or protective cardboard, masking skirting boards, door and window frames with masking tape, covering furniture that can't be taken out of the room, and protecting electrical accessories (switches and sockets) or removing them if the job allows.

How long it takes depending on the room

As an indicative reference, an empty room or one with little furniture can be protected in 20-30 minutes; a heavily furnished room (living room with sofas, shelves, table) can take 45-60 minutes just to protect, before starting to paint.

Why include it in the quote

If this item isn't reflected, the painter ends up absorbing that time within the price of the painting, which makes it look like they "get little done" when in fact they are investing necessary time in protecting the client's home. Reflecting it as an item (even a grouped one) gives the quote transparency.
