Metal framing is the skeleton of the plasterboard partition, and miscalculating it (in quantity or spacing) compromises both the final appearance and the resistance to impacts.
Tracks: the perimeter of the partition
Tracks are installed on the floor and ceiling (and sometimes on the sides against the wall), marking the partition's perimeter. One top track and one bottom track are needed for each straight run, calculated from the partition's total length plus a small cutting margin.
Studs: the spacing sets the strength
Vertical studs are placed within the tracks, usually every 40 or 60 cm, depending on the partition height and the strength required: a 40 cm spacing gives a stiffer partition more resistant to impacts than one at 60 cm, although it uses more profile. On tall partitions (over 3 metres) or with heavy furniture hung from them, the smaller spacing is recommended.
How to estimate the total length
As a practical reference, a standard-height partition (2.5-3 m) needs approximately 3-4 linear metres of stud per linear metre of partition, plus the perimeter tracks. Adding a 10% margin to the calculation covers cuts and adjustments on site.
