The insulation placed inside the framework of a plasterboard partition is one of the most worthwhile items to improve: it barely raises the cost of the project and multiplies the perceived acoustic and thermal comfort.

Glass (mineral) wool: the economical option

It is the most common insulation thanks to its good price-performance ratio, with good thermal and acoustic behaviour for standard housing partitions. Its most common density for plasterboard partitions is around 40-70 kg/m³.

Rock wool: better acoustic and fire performance

Rock wool has a higher density and better sound absorption than glass wool at the same thickness, as well as superior fire behaviour, so it is prioritised in party walls between homes or in partitions where the fire protection regulations are more demanding.

Thickness: the variable with the most influence on the result

More important than the brand is the thickness chosen in relation to the cavity available in the framework: a partition with a 70 mm stud filled with 45 mm insulation performs worse than the same partition with insulation filling the whole available cavity. Getting this ratio right is key to justifying the acoustic performance promised to the client.
