Leaving a door opening in a plasterboard partition without proper reinforcement is one of the most common causes of misaligned frames and hinges that work loose over time.

Lintel reinforcement

Above the door opening, the lintel (the upper horizontal part) must be reinforced with additional profiles or timber embedded in the partition itself, able to spread the weight of the structure above without the opening deforming over time.

Reinforced side studs

The studs forming the sides of the door opening take the weight of the frame and the repeated use of opening and closing, so they are usually doubled (two profiles joined) or reinforced with internal timber to give more rigidity to the point where the door frame is later screwed.

What happens if it isn't reinforced

Without this reinforcement, the door frame may end up anchored only to the plasterboard sheet, which lacks the strength to withstand daily use: the frame moves, the door starts to rub and the hinges work loose within a few months. Quoting the reinforcement from the start avoids a certain claim later on.
