When a client asks for "a bit of home automation" they don't always need an expensive centralised system: most of the time it's enough to replace specific accessories with their smart version, without changing the rest of the installation.
Wi-Fi switches and dimmers
They replace the conventional switch in the same box recess, with no need for an additional neutral wire in the most recent models. They let you turn lights on by app or voice and set schedules. It's the cheapest and most requested home automation upgrade.
Smart thermostats
They are fitted on the existing heating or cooling circuit and let you programme temperature by hour and by zone, with real consumption savings. They need no additional wiring if a wall thermostat already existed.
Remote-controlled sockets and blinds
Smart sockets control remote switching on of any appliance plugged in; Wi-Fi blind motors replace the usual double switch and let you programme automatic opening and closing.
When a centralised system is worthwhile
A centralised home automation system (with a controller and its own bus) is only justified in full renovations where the whole installation is rethought from scratch, because it needs specific cabling that is much more expensive to add afterwards.
