How many rolls of wallpaper do I need for a wall?

Why the pattern repeat changes how many rolls are needed, and the difference between wallpaper, decorative vinyl and Venetian plaster.

Calculating wallpaper rolls only from the wall area, without taking the pattern into account, is the most common way of running short halfway through a room — and with wallpaper, finding the same batch later isn't always possible.

The pattern repeat changes how much paper is needed

Roll consumption depends on the roll width and the repeat of the design. Designs with a large repeat — patterns that repeat every 50–60 cm — produce more waste from matching the strips than a plain or small-pattern paper, because the pattern has to be aligned from strip to strip.

The standard margin is 15% for pattern matching over the area to be papered.

Worked example: to paper 20 m² of wall: (20 ÷ 5) × 1.15 = 5 rolls (each roll covers a reference 5 m²). This is the same calculation the PresupuestoYa calculator applies automatically for the Painter trade.

Always buy from the same manufacturing batch: between different batches there can be small differences in tone that show at the join, especially under raking light.

Decorative vinyl: less margin, but it demands more care with the substrate

Decorative or self-adhesive vinyl, for walls, furniture or glass with wood-effect, stone-effect or design finishes, carries a 10% margin for offcuts. The substrate must be perfectly smooth, clean and dry before applying it — any imperfection shows through the material. On large surfaces, always work with a partner to avoid air bubbles when laying it.

Venetian plaster: labour weighs more than the material

Venetian plaster, a decorative mineral-paste covering applied with a trowel in several layers with a polished, marble-like finish, uses roughly 1.5 kg per m². The technique requires several thin coats applied with a trowel and a final polish (sometimes with wax), so labour time is far greater than for conventional paint over the same area — always quote the labour for this finish separately.

Frequently asked questions

Why do I need more rolls if the design has a large pattern? Because the pattern has to be matched between strips, and a large repeat (patterns repeating every 50–60 cm) produces more trimming waste than a plain or small-pattern design.

Can I buy rolls of wallpaper from different batches? It isn't recommended: between different manufacturing batches there can be small differences in tone that show at the join.

Why is Venetian plaster more expensive than ordinary decorative paint? Because the labour is much greater: it needs several thin trowelled coats and a final polish, compared with applying a conventional paint by roller.

Conclusion

Calculating wallpaper by the design's repeat —not just the area— and always buying from the same batch is what avoids running short or noticing differences in tone at the join. For Venetian plaster and other decorative finishes, separating the labour cost from the material makes clear to the client why that finish costs more than standard paint.
