Although it may seem a simpler surface because it has no door or window openings, painting a ceiling usually costs more per m² than painting a wall, and it's worth explaining why when quoting.
Why it costs more per square metre
Working with arms raised for hours reduces the painter's output per hour, and the risk of drips onto the floor and furniture means the area has to be better protected before starting. On top of this, ceilings usually need high-coverage matt paint, with more coats if there are damp stains or differences in tone.
Guideline price
As a reference, painting a ceiling in good condition usually costs between €1 and 3/m² more than an equivalent wall on the same job, and that difference grows if cracks typical of ceilings (from movement of the structure) have to be repaired before painting.
Protecting the surroundings
Protecting floor and furniture with plastic and masking tape is an item of real time that many painting quotes don't show separately, although in heavily furnished rooms it can be a significant part of the total time of the job.
