Choosing the colour is often the part of the project that drags on longest, and it isn't the painter's job to decide for the client, but it is their job to help them decide quickly and well.

Try it on the wall, not in the tin

A colour looks different in the tin, on the swatch strip and on the real wall, depending on the light in the room. Recommending painting a sample of at least 50x50 cm directly on the wall, and watching it at different times of day, avoids changes of mind halfway through the job.

Safe neutrals vs. trend colours

Neutral tones (off-whites, warm greys, beige) are the safest option for undecided clients or those thinking of selling the home in future, whereas trend colours work better on feature walls (a headboard wall, a short corridor) than across a whole large room.

Why fix the colour before giving a fixed price

A change of colour halfway through can mean buying new paint and repeating coats already applied. Writing the exact colour (manufacturer reference) into the quote avoids ambiguity and protects against a last-minute change at no extra cost.
