Installing artificial grass: what the base needs before laying it

The result of artificial grass depends above all on the base, not on the material itself. Which layers must be prepared before installation.

The quality of the artificial grass you buy hardly matters if the base it is installed on is badly prepared: premium grass on an uneven base or one without drainage gives a worse result than a budget grass that is installed well.

Ground preparation

The first step is to remove the existing vegetation layer (soil and roots) and level the ground, compacting lightly to avoid uneven settlement over time. Any unevenness in the base translates directly into visible wrinkles or lumps in the installed grass.

Drainage base

A layer of compacted crushed stone or gravel (usually 5 to 8 cm) is spread over the levelled ground, allowing rainwater to drain without waterlogging the grass or the base, avoiding bad smells and moss growth from standing damp.

Anti-weed geotextile

Before laying the artificial grass itself, a geotextile sheet is installed that stops vegetation growing up from the ground through the drainage. Omitting this layer to save on the quote is the most common reason for weeds appearing between the grass fibres months later.
