When a client asks for a hedge "for privacy now", the choice of species is the decision that will most determine their satisfaction, because they don't all grow or keep the same.
Fast-growing species
Species such as privet, photinia or certain fast-growing conifers can gain considerable height within a few seasons, suitable when the client's priority is to get privacy as soon as possible. In return, they usually need more frequent pruning to keep a compact shape and not get out of control.
Slow-growing but low-maintenance species
Box or laurel, of slower growth, need less maintenance pruning once formed, although they take longer to reach the desired height. They are a good option when the client is in no hurry and prioritises reducing future maintenance.
Planting density: as important as the species
Besides choosing the species well, planting density (number of plants per linear metre) determines how long the hedge takes to close completely with no visible gaps. Planting wider apart saves on initial material but considerably lengthens the time to achieve the desired privacy.
