A tiling job can look perfect and still fail at one very specific point: the junction between floor and wall in the shower area, if it hasn't been protected before laying the tile.

Waterproofing tape: the most common leak point

Waterproofing tape is a waterproof band placed at the floor-wall junction and at the corners of the shower before tiling, preventing leaks beneath the tiling. It does not replace complete waterproofing of the shower tray, but covers exactly the most common leak point: that specific junction where water strikes directly and constantly.

A 10% margin is added over the length of junctions for overlaps and corners.

Trim profiles: the material according to the requirement

Trim profiles or corner beads finish an exposed tile edge (external corner, junction with another material) without leaving the tile's edge on view:

  • PVC: the cheapest, suits most bathrooms.
  • Aluminium or stainless steel: in kitchens or areas with higher aesthetic demands, gives a more refined finish and withstands knocks better.

A 10% margin is added over the length of edges for cuts and mitres.

Why these details get forgotten when quoting

Both elements go "behind" the visible tiling or at a specific, not very showy point, so they are easy to forget when making a quick quote focused only on the m² of tile. But they are exactly the points where problems appear later: leaks at the floor-wall junction, or unprotected tile edges that chip with use.

Frequently asked questions

Does the waterproofing tape replace waterproofing the shower tray? No: it covers the floor-wall junction, the most common leak point, but doesn't replace complete waterproofing of the tray if the project requires it.

When does an aluminium trim profile pay off compared with PVC? In kitchens or areas with higher aesthetic demands, where the finish and knock resistance justify the extra cost over standard PVC.

Where exactly is the waterproofing tape placed? At the junction between floor and wall and at the corners of the shower area, before laying the tile over it.

Conclusion

The waterproofing tape and trim profiles are not part of the "pretty tile" seen at first glance, but they are the details that prevent a leak or a chipped edge months after the work is finished. Including them as explicit items in the quote, not as an assumed extra, is what makes the work last.
