Any professional with enough years of experience has come across a client who constantly changes their mind, questions every technical decision or demands more than the quote covers. Managing that relationship well stops a project turning into needless wear and tear.

Document everything from the start

With a demanding client, putting every decision, change and agreement in writing (even by message) is the best protection against later misunderstandings about what was really agreed.

Explain the technical "why", not just the "what"

When a client questions a technical decision, explaining the reason (why that solution is the right one, not just "that's how it's done") helps them understand the professional reasoning behind it, instead of perceiving it as an arbitrary imposition.

Know when to set limits

Faced with requests that clearly exceed the agreed scope, it's more professional to calmly explain that this means an additional quote than to give in without charging to avoid conflict. Giving in systematically only encourages the request to be repeated on the next project.

When it's worth turning a project down

If from the very first contact a client shows clear signs of being especially difficult, weighing up whether the project is worth the expected wear is a legitimate business decision, not a lack of professionalism.
